Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not addressed, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice more symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
